Power Source Combinations at U.S. Power Plants

Combined power sources

Power plants can use multiple power sources for generating electricity. These plants occur throughout the United States. One potential benefit of a multiple source power generation facility is being able to produce power under varied economic and natural climates. For example, if there is a drought, a hydroelectric plant may produce lower amounts of power. But if this hydroelectric plant could also produce electricity from another source, then the plant could switch over to this other source to still provide power.

This map shows four combinations of power sources at plants throughout the United States, and the plotting size is proportional to total output. Mouseover the plants to learn more about the total output and output by source.
